every member of the audience was giving our students a standing ovation! To all the performers in both casts, the musicians in the pit, the skilled technicians and our show's director and crew -
thank you and congratulations! You created holiday magic for all of us and we are appreciative and impressed by your ingenuity, skill and dedication to the show. We wish you now plenty of rest...
This issue of SNN is really, really long. WHY? We have added many, many, many summer programs - many of them completely free!
The catch? You have to apply! Closing dates for applications for a number of
summer programs are January, February and March. These types of programs are opportunities for a learning-filled summer, to try something new and yes, colleges are interested in how you spend your summer months!
Nothing worse than a missed deadline!

Interview Series, we are delighted to introduce
Fine Arts Assistant Principal Heather O' Connell Polacik. Please read Ron Sklar's interview with her about
"Creating A Safe Place To Nurture Your Art."
The most common challenge seen by Fine Art assistant principal Heather O' Connell Polacik: lack of confidence among student artists. She has solutions, though.
"Students often need support in knowing that either the art they are creating needs work or that there are places they can go with it," she says.
"There is always room for growth without allowing their insecurities to hold them back -- that's where a lot of the work takes place."

Families were equally appreciative of their students development (and développés) during their studio "observations" when they
had the opportunity to observe their students during their dance classes!

New York State Summer School of the Arts program (NYSSSA) spoke about Summer Arts and Academic Opportunities. Information about the resources discussed with be shared soon.
LaG Show Choir was on the 50-yard line at the Giants half-time show this afternoon. The Giants started their victory with a touchdown immediately after the choir sang. Coincidence...we think not! Show Choir sang You Will Be Found with the lead from the Broadway cast of Dear Evan Hanson. It was also the send-off game for Eli Manning - so pretty exciting all around. We hope you are having a blast representing our school and are enjoying your Dear Evan Hansen scarves!

NAVIANCE ACCESS! SECURITY UPDATE!
Naviance is the online system we use to provide students with college planning and career assessment tools. LaGuardia Administration has advised of a new Naviance Security Feature - If a student/parent has a valid email address in Naviance, they will be able to reset their own password. Students/ parents will receive an email with their temporary password to use to log in, and then will be required to reset their password to the new requirements. If a student/parent does not currently have a valid email address in Naviance, as of December 16th they will be able to auto-generate a temporary password.

The College Now STEM Research Academy at City Tech is a two-part program designed to provide high school students with an opportunity to develop strong college level research skills by engaging in authentic science inquiry and research activities. Selected students will be enrolled into a free Spring 2020 pre-college research course. Upon successful completion of the spring course, students will have the opportunity to apply for the 2020 STEM Summer Research Internship.
The Summer Program is FREE to students. College Now covers the cost of tuition, books, and supplies. Students who participate will also receive a City Tech College ID card, free lunch, metro card, and stipend upon completion of the summer internship program. For more information and to apply!

National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) Opt Out Letter
Deadline: January 10, 2020
The NSC has data on where students go to college and what types of degrees they receive from more than 3,600 colleges and universities. The NSC uses directory information from the NYC DOE to identify former NYC DOE students and to give information to the NYC DOE about where these students went to college, when they went to college, their graduation dates, and what types of degrees they received. The NYC DOE uses this information from the National Student Clearinghouse to help understand and improve students' college readiness and success.

THE NYU TANDON SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING'S ARISE PROGRAM
Application Deadline: Sunday, March 1, 2020
Program Dates: June 29 - August 14, 2020
ARISE is a free 7-week summer research program in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) disciplines.
Selected students will:
- Conduct authentic research while being mentored by a graduate student and/or faculty member in one of 30+ active labs
- Investigate a range of questions in engineering, data science and life science and make practical, substantive contributions to the lab's objectives
- Get an introduction to essential principles that prepare students for college and in-demand careers as well as in areas like scientific ethics, contemporary issues in scientific inquiry, data collection and analysis, research practices, and lab safety
- Receive training in speaking and presentation skills, and guidance on preparing for the college application process
POTENTIAL CANDIDATES ARE -
- New York City residents completing 10th or 11th grade in June 2020
- STEM-passionate, academically engaged, motivated students. Successful applicants do not need to be the "best" students or have the highest grades
- Students who will attend the entire program June 29-August 14, 2020
- Responsible students who fulfill commitments and demonstrate timeliness and persistence.

YANKEE-STONEWALL SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION

The Department of Education, in partnership with the Stonewall Inn and the New York Yankees, is again offering the Yankee-Stonewall Scholarship. A
$10,000 scholarship will be awarded to five students, one from each borough. A student is eligible for this scholarship if they: - are a current high school senior, - are planning to attend a two-year or four-year college, - are a member of the LGBTQ+ community, or an ally who has contributed significantly to the LGBTQ+ community, and - have a 2.5 GPA or higher.

THE TISCH SUMMER 2020 HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM

The Tisch Summer High School Program is tuition-based and culminates in six college credits, open to high school sophomores and juniors from around the world. This program is not a leisure summer camp; it is a commitment of four weeks on campus that encompasses a highly structured class schedule, which include projects, professional training, and collaboration. The classes are based on the Tisch undergraduate curriculum. Students in the Tisch Summer High School Program are expected to complete any coursework and professional training requirements of the artistic track they are enrolled in. Students apply to one of these artistic tracks: Dance, Drama, Production & Design, Dramatic Writing, Filmmaking, Game Design, Photography and Imaging, or Recorded Music.

ANDOVER'S MATHEMATICS & SCIENCE
FOR MINORITY STUDENTS
Application Deadline: January 3, 2020 - EXTENDED!
For freshmen families only, the Andover School in Massachusetts hosts a FREE residential summer program for African-American, Hispanic/Latinx, and Native American students with demonstrated financial need who are interested in STEM careers, including medicine and technology. The program, called (MS)2, covers all course fees, books, materials, and room and board for a five-week summer program. Accepted students commit to attend for three consecutive summers, during which they receive academic enrichment in STEM subjects, as well as individualized college counseling. The 12/15/19 deadline has been extended for LaGuardia students until 1/3/20 so that our students have time to assemble their application materials (including teacher recommendations and transcript). The Andover summer program usually costs $10,000 per summer, so this opportunity has a $30,000 value over the three years. Only freshman are eligible, so this will be the only opportunity for students in the Class of '23 to apply.

NEW YORK STATE SUMMER SCHOOL OF THE ARTS (NYSSSA)

Founded in 1970, the New York State Summer School of the Arts (NYSSSA) is a highly-competitive summer arts residential program funded by the New York State Education Department and student tuition. The four week, pre-professional summer curriculum includes individual and group instruction designed to help each student explore and develop their talents in ballet, choral studies, modern dance, visual arts, media arts, orchestral studies, or theatre. Students live in a college dorm and take classes from performing and visual artists for 6-12 hours a day, six days a week in their area of concentration.

THE SUMMER ARTS INSTITUTE (SAI)

The Summer Arts Institute (SAI) is a tuition-free, month-long summer arts intensive program, serving NYC public school students entering grades 8 through 12. This public-private partnership, hosted by Frank Sinatra School of the Arts with the support of key arts leaders, including Tony Bennett, was designed to increase access to advanced arts training to prepare students for college and career success in the arts. Now in its 18th year, SAI continues to provide approximately 400 students the opportunity to study dance, theater, vocal music, instrumental music, visual art, or film.

WINGSPAN ARTS SUMMER CONSERVATORY

Program Dates July 6 - August 16
The Wingspan Arts Summer Conservatory is a tuition-free, audition-based program for high school students. Offering a true conservatory experience, this program combines both classwork and an in-depth rehearsal process culminating in full-scale theatrical productions.
The Wingspan Ensemble is for incoming 9th-12th grade students invested in broadening their theatrical skillset. Students take a wide variety of specialized classes, focusing on both skills building and exposure to the professional arts world. In production, Wingspan Ensemble students are cast in either a musical or a play. Show selections feature smaller casts, more challenging material, and offer more opportunity for student involvement in the creative process. In past years, the Ensemble has performed shows such as Merrily We Roll Along, Ragtime, Twelfth Night, The Heidi Chronicles and The Laramie Project.

ARTSBRIDGE SUMMER

Program Dates: July 25 - August 8
Since 2010, ArtsBridge Summer has given high school performing artists the tools to perfect their craft and audition approach, guided by top college arts faculty and industry professionals. ArtsBridge Summer programs are designed to hone the skills of students who pursue acting, musical theater, and classical music at the college level and beyond.
ArtsBridge Summer is a two-week program held at the Baldwin Wallace University. Need-based scholarships are available.

THE BROWN SCHOLARS PROGRAM - SUMMER 2020!

Program Dates: 5 days/week, 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM for six weeks, July through August
This program is an introduction to programming and is intended for high school girls who have had limited access to coding classes/resources. It is tuition-free thanks to a generous grant from the Helen Gurley Brown Revocable Trust. For more information and to apply.

LIFEGUARDS WANTED - SUMMER 2020!

Try out now to become an NYC lifeguard for Summer 2020!
NYC Parks is starting the search for new candidates with strong swimming skills to participate in our
free
lifeguard training program
for the upcoming summer season.
Testing locations can be found throughout the five boroughs.
Find a qualifying test location near you.
Please check back periodically as additional dates may be added.
For those who qualify, training begins in January. First-year lifeguards earn a minimum of $15.00 an hour. Most lifeguards work 48 hours each week, for a weekly salary of up to $800.
New York City's 8 beaches are open from Memorial Day weekend through the week after Labor Day, and the 53 outdoor pools are open from late June through the week after Labor Day.
There is no need for an appointment; just be sure to bring a bathing suit, towel and lock for a locker.

TISCH SPRING FUTURE ARTISTS PROGRAM

The Spring Future Artists Programs are free of charge and for groups traditionally underrepresented in the media industry. They are designed for students who may not have access to other programs and who would qualify for financial aid at NYU. High school students applying to the Spring Future Artists Programs must submit an NYU Financial Information Form (please review the
Spring Future Artists Admissions Requirements
for details). These programs require a 14-week commitment on Saturdays from early February through mid-May and are taught by faculty from the undergraduate departments. This is a commuter program, not a residency program. To be eligible for this program, you must be a junior in high school or younger and attend a high school in one of the five boroughs of New York City, or (but not limited to) Westchester County, Long Island, New Jersey, parts of Philadelphia and Connecticut.

THE ANGELO DEL TORO PUERTO RICAN/HISPANIC YOUTH LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE

Event date: January 18 - March 9, 2020
The institute is open to students of Hispanic heritage in grades 10 through 12. The program provides students with the opportunity to learn how a bill is passed in the State Assembly, develop writing skills, learn the art of debating, and build leadership skills. The institute begins on January 18, 2020 and culminates in a weekend trip to Albany for students in grades 11 and 12 March 7-9, 2020. To apply, students must submit a 525-750 word essay online. THE NEW GROUP - SCENE 1

Scene 1 is The New Group's innovative theater education program serving NYC public high school students. Prioritizing ensemble building and character development, students learn advanced acting, playwriting, and movement skills with seasoned professionals, including Master Classes with New Group artists. The goals of Scene 1 are to develop students' voices as emerging artists through the creation of original work that connects to their lives, to provide students with courses in acting and writing, and to create an ensemble of young artists who understand what it means to be part of a community. USDA/1890 NATIONAL SCHOLARS PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarships are awarded annually and must be used at one of the 1890 Historically Black Land-Grant Universities. Each award provides full tuition, as well as room and board, for the term of the scholarship. The scholarship may be renewed each year, contingent upon satisfactory academic performance and normal progress toward the bachelor's degree.
To be eligible for the USDA/1890 National Scholars Program scholarship a student must:
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better (on a 4.0 scale)
- Have been accepted for admission or currently attending one of the nineteen 1890 Historically Black Land-Grant Universities.
- Study agriculture, food, natural resource sciences, or other related academic disciplines
- Demonstrate leadership and community service
- Submit an official transcript with the school seal and an authorized official's signature
- Submit a signed application (original signature only)
Who Should Apply
The USDA/1890 National Scholars Program is available to
high school seniors entering their freshman year of college and rising college sophomores and juniors.

A WESTSIDE EXPERIMENT | YOUNG ACTORS LABORATORY
Dates: July 6-10, 13-18, 2020, 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Since 2007, IRT Theater has served the downtown theater community by providing space, support and community for independent artists through its 3B Development Series. An offshoot of IRT's 3B Development Series, the Westside Experiment offers students the skills to create original devised theater in collaboration with a working theater company in residence at IRT.
The progressive Young Actors Laboratory program still covers all the theater essentials, like physical-acting technique, improvisation & script writing, but with a decidedly downtown twist. This years unique summer experience will include a fusion of sign language, spoken word, mime, storytelling, dance and music. This is a great choice for students, hearing, deaf, and hard-of hearing, who are interested in theater but eager to try something more offbeat than, say, Oklahoma.
No prior acting experience necessary. Artists of all disciplines encouraged to apply. Bring an open mind and have it blown away!
